Since 2009 Member of the European Parliament (SPD), for the cities Krefeld, Düsseldorf, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach, Remscheid, Solingen, Wuppertal and the administrative districts Mettmann and Neuss, („constituency“).

Member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D).

Present functions in the European Parliament

  • Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education (apart from culture and education this committee is responsible for information-society, media, youth and sports policy)
  • Member of the Delegation to the EU-Montenegro SAPC
  • Substitute member of the Delegation to the EU-Albania Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee

Born on 1st of June 1966 in Duisburg, married, adult stepson.

  • 1985 Highschool degree at the Städtisches Lessing-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf
  • 1985 – 1992 studied Sociology and Political Science at University of Duisburg
  • 1992 Degree in Social Science
  • 1992 – 2002 Scientific assistant to German MEPs
  • 2002 – 2009 Consultant ARD public service broadcasting company (exempt since 14.7.2009)

  • 2004 - 2012 Member of the executive committee of the SPD Niederrhein region
  • Since 2009 Member of the executive committee of the SPD-media commission
  • Since 2012 Member of the executive committee of the NRWSPD
  • Since December 2009 Member of the WDR-broadcasting council
  • Since October 2010 Chair of the Program committee of the WDR-broadcasting council
