Adj. Prof. Dr. Silke von Lewinski

President of ALAI Germany

Silke von Lewinski is tenured at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich, and specialises in international and European copyright law. Adj. Professor at Franklin Pierce Center for IP at the University of New Hampshire, Concord, NH, USA, and Assistant Professor, University of Zagreb. She is president of ALAI Deutschland and a Vice President of ALAI (Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale).

She frequently has been an expert consulting the European Commission, eg on the EC Rental Rights Directive 1992 (drafting EC proposal, steering through legislative process, etc.), and regarding the WIPO Diplomatic Conference 1996 (preparation, and member of EC delegation; outcome: WCT and WPPT). Deputy Head of Delegation (2000: delegate) for Germany at the WIPO Diplomatic Conferences 2000 and 2012 (outcome: Beijing Treaty) and 2013 (outcome: Marrakesh Treaty). Chief legal expert consulting the governments of Eastern and Central European and former Soviet countries on their copyright legislation in the framework of the EC’s TA programs from 1995.

Her book publications include the treatise “International Copyright Law and Policy” (OUP, 2008); “European Copyright Law” (with Walter et al., OUP, 2010); “The WIPO Treaties on Copyright” (with Reinbothe, 2nd edn OUP 2015); she edits “Copyright throughout the World” (West, 2008, with annual updates). Frequent visiting professorships worldwide, eg, at Paris XI, Toulouse 1; Laval/Québec, Melbourne. First Walter Minton Visiting Scholar at Columbia University Law School Law, New York (1998); the First Distinguished Visitor to the IP Research Institute of Australia (2002); and The Hosier Distinguished Visiting IP Scholar, DePaul University, Chicago, 2005. Memberships include: Administrative Council of VG Wort; Editorial Board of the Journal of the Copyright Society of the USA.
